Prescribed Goat Grazing for Savanna Restoration - SOLD OUT!

Goat Grazing Specialist with Diversity Landworks

Join us for a look at the techniques and considerations for using goats to control buckthorn. We’ll start with a fencing and water system demonstration and training by the goat managers from Diversity Landworks. Learn all the tips and tricks they’ve figured out in using portable electric net fencing in hilly, brushy terrain. Then we’ll take a look at the work the goats have done over the past couple of years and particularly the work done this spring and early summer. We’ll also hear from park staff and Great River Greening restoration professionals about their plans for restoration and some of the other tools they’re using to achieve their goals. Additional discussion ranging from general buckthorn control considerations, to native understory seedings, to prescribed fire will follow.

For those of you thinking about bringing small ruminants into your vegetation management work, this should be a very informative opportunity to learn from the experts.

Parking,walking and food:

• We'll meet at the visitor center. Ample parking around it on the east side of the park.
• We'll need to walk on unpaved trails for a stretch. It could be a total of 1 mile walking round trip (10-15 minute walk each way).
• Water and food will be provided.

Registration: This event is limited to 50 participants. Advance registration required.  Free admission. Registration will close at 10 AM CT on Friday, June 21, or after space fills.
