Hands-On Market Gardening Field Day

10/11/2025 01:00 PM - 05:00 PM CT

Description

From bed prep to garlic planting—farm-tested methods you can use.

Profitable small scale vegetable producers rely on specific tools and techniques to make sure their work in the field is efficient and effective. At this field day/demonstration Joel Barr of Abraham's Table Farm will introduce you to the suite of simple hand tools they use to manage their garden and walk you through one of the core processes they use to prepare the soil for planting.

This event will begin with a tour of Abraham's Table Farm, involve a real bed preparation demonstration, and culminate in a hands-on garlic planting party in the freshly prepared garden beds. If you're serious about market gardening and want to learn about the process used on a profitable farm in your region this event is for you.

Joel Barr is SFA's new Market Garden & Farm Management Systems Consultant. He and his family own and operate Abraham’s Table Farm in Sandstone MN which produces and direct markets organic vegetables, pasture raised chicken, eggs, and beef. With over a decade of experience and multiple opportunities to start and build farms, Joel has learned what works and what doesn’t. Joel and his team rely on simple, lean, and agile management systems to cut waste, keep the team focused and - most importantly - grow and deliver a lot of nutrient dense food to their community.

As an aggressive learner Joel is largely self taught and enjoys the interdisciplinary aspects of small scale farming as well as the pressure and necessity of turning abstract theory into practical and profitable practices. Joel’s degree in English and background in teaching enable him to be an effective communicator, speaker, and writer. Joel believes that small scale farming can work and is excited to help farmers establish better practices that set them up for success.
