Garlic Growers Field Day: Finland

SFA’s Minnesota Premium Garlic Project is hosting an upcoming field day at one of its field trial sites from 1 to 4 p.m. Sat., July 6: Round River Farm, 5879 Nikolai Rd, Finland.

Nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains along the North Shore of Lake Superior, Round River Farm is a solar- and wind-powered homestead, founded on the ideal of sustainability and balance within the environment. This is a region not typically known for agriculture, and for good reason: the landscape was scraped bare by glaciers, the northern climate is unforgiving – they’ve had frost every month of the year – and the bedrock lies less than two feet below the soil’s surface.

And yet, they grow great garlic, which they sell through their CSA and at the Finland Farmers Market. Round River Farm is one of the MN Premium Garlic Project field trial cites, so farmers Lise and David Abazs will talk about their trials on spring fertilization, seed dip treatment, planting dates and mulch removal.
